The account of Korah's rebellion and the budding of Aaron's staff teaches one of the most sobering lessons in Scripture: Proximity to God's presence does not guarantee a heart that is yielded to Him.

In Numbers 16, Korah led a rebellion against Moses and Aaron. What makes this account so striking is that Korah was not an outsider. He was a Levite, chosen to serve in the tabernacle. He had the privilege of ministering in the place where God's presence dwelt. He had witnessed God's glory, knew God's commandments, and served in holy things. Yet despite all of this, his heart became filled with pride, ambition, and discontent. Instead of humbling himself before God, he challenged God's appointed leadership.

Korah's downfall reminds us that being around holy things is not the same as being made holy. A person may spend years in ministry, serve faithfully in church, lead worship, preach,…
